IRS replaces IRS2Go with new app offering broader account access

fraud-prevention regulatory-compliance tax-planning

The IRS has launched a new mobile app to replace IRS2Go, adding secure access to a wider set of account services beyond the old app's basic refund-check and free-filing features. Taxpayers can now use the app to view account balances, make payments, review payment history, access tax transcripts, view certain IRS notices and letters, manage profile preferences, and retrieve an Identity Protection PIN (a code that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number). The app is free on the Apple App Store and Google Play; existing IRS2Go users with automatic updates enabled will receive it through the normal update process.

The IRS warns taxpayers to download the app only through verified links or the official app store listings and to be cautious of look-alike apps, fake ads, and unsolicited texts or emails claiming to provide IRS account access. The agency says it will never ask for sensitive personal or financial information through an unsolicited text, email, or pop-up — a reminder especially relevant as impersonation scams targeting taxpayers remain common.
