Full analysis

The 2026 Social Security Trustees Report projects that the program's trust fund — the accumulated reserve used to cover the gap between payroll tax revenue and benefit payments — will be exhausted in the fourth quarter of 2032, roughly six years away. At that point, if Congress has taken no action, incoming payroll taxes would cover only about 78% of scheduled benefits, meaning anyone receiving Social Security could face an automatic 22% benefit cut. The shortfall is driven by baby boomers retiring in large numbers, rising life expectancy, and declining birth rates producing fewer workers paying into the system.
